Rural Generalist

The Wawa Medical Group is recruiting full scope Rural Generalist to join our team. Our physicians practice at the Wawa Family Health team in our co-location at the Lady Dunn Health Centre under one roof in Wawa, Ontario.

Wawa is a friendly, small town of approximately 3,000 people who welcome visitors and new residents alike with open arms. The town is located at the junction of Highways 101 and 17 therefore the Lady Dunn Health Centre (LDHC) and WFHT serve a catchment area of approximately 5,000, including First Nation and Francophone populations. .

Wawa is only 15 minutes away from the sparkling clear waters, clean spacious beaches, and pristine rugged coastline of majestic Lake Superior. The town itself abuts the inland shore of expansive Wawa Lake.
The town of Wawa boasts activities for the whole family in all seasons. From cross country skiing, ice fishing, snowmobiling trails, breath-taking trails in the area for snowshoeing, along with skating, hockey and curling at the well-equipped fitness community centre in winter. Lake Superior Park is an 80 km long pristine park with numerous trails for hiking or canoeing and backcountry or car camping with the first route only 15 minutes away. Wawa also offers English and French primary and secondary schools.

Rural Generalist
DEFINITION & STATUS
Our physicians practice full scope Family Medicine which includes low-volume emergency department (10-20 patients per day), 3-4 days of family medicine clinic at the FHT, hospitalist, minor lumps and bumps. We have excellent specialist support in Sault Ste Maire and Sudbury as well as support by a breadth of allied health care providers at the Family Health Team.

Other opportunities include the Medical Officer at the Lady Dunn Health Centre’s Long Term Care facility, Lead Physician in the MINT Memory Clinic, and monthly clinics in our satellite communities. We are a teaching site for the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, with frequent opportunities to work with residents and medical students.
KNOWLEDGE & COMPETENCIES

Education

  • Valid OHIP Billing Number

  • Valid CPSO Number

  • We do not require FRCP/CCFP-EM, although you should be comfortable with rural Emergency Medicine. ACLS/ATLS are required (NRP/PALS is encouraged). 


Skills/Abilities

  • Strong health assessment skills;

  • Strong organizational skills;

  • Knowledge and proficiency in current, evidence-based methods and practices of primary care delivery, with an emphasis on attaining the organization’s strategic goals;

  • Good time management, communication, and interpersonal skills;

  • Desire and ability to update knowledge and skills through various means including technology-based opportunities, courses, workshops, and conferences;

  • Exhibit the ability to be open and non-judgmental;

  • The RG maintains knowledge of the goals and structure of the organization, the policies and procedures and the programs.

  • Superior communication, problem solving and conflict resolution skills


As the WFHT is established and always welcoming innovative projects and strategies to meet the primary care of our community. The Rural Generalist needs to be flexible and able to adapt as the organization progresses.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical:

  • Promotes an inter-disciplinary approach to client-centered care. Communicates effectively with all Wawa Family Health Team staff and clients;

  • Screens, prioritizes, and processes client referrals;

  • Spends adequate time with the client to determine the presence of existing and potential health problems, with a major focus on related lifestyle, psychological, socio-cultural, and environmental risk factors that may influence the client’s health status, deals with these personally or by referral to or in consultation with the other Family Health Team members or community programs or agencies;

  • In collaboration with AHP’s, develops and discusses appropriate individualized care plan with the client/family/caregiver based on best practices;

  • Works in collaboration with interdisciplinary team to provide appropriate primary care safely and effectively to clients;

  • Stays current and aware of opportunities to implement new, evidence-based methods of client assessment, treatment, and programming;

  • In accordance with the philosophy of primary health care, encourages clients and their families to take responsibility for their own health care by involving them in risk factor and health problem identification, goal setting and the choices of interventions for disease treatment and prevention and health promotion;

  • Communicates effectively with all clients, families, peers, other team members and community partners;

  • Keeps complete, accurate, legible, and timely reports of client visits, using the charting format established by the Wawa Family Health Team, which will provide information to assist other practitioners in continuing the client’s care;

  • Sees clients at the Wawa Family Health Team with scheduled and urgent needs appointments in the community during regular and extended hours;

  • Collaborates with community agencies to implement strategies to promote health and prevent disease;

  • Synthesizes information from individual clients to identify broader implications within the family;

  • Assesses and manages the care of families in conjunction with community support agencies;

  • Synthesizes information from individual clients to identify broader implication for health within the community;

  • Uses community assessment data to identify community needs and resources to develop, implement and evaluate appropriate programming in conjunction with appropriate community agencies;

  • Participates in the development and evaluation of policies, protocols, and procedures to improve client care and/or promote co-operative and efficient staff functioning;

  • Supervises medical students and participates in the education of other students placed within the community when applicable;

  • Attend CME and rounds, when required.


Administrative:

  • Participates in interdisciplinary committees to promote professional / interpersonal development;

  • Communicates effectively with health care team members to create a cohesive team and seamless services to the community;

  • Actively participates in staff, team, and committee meetings as appropriate;

  • Maintains strict confidentiality of team, personnel, and client information in all aspects of work;

  • Proficient in computer skills and uses IT in as many aspects of practice as possible; Electronic charting with Accuro and Meditech Expanse;

  • Promotes the Wawa Family Health Team mission statement within the organization and works to achieve goals and objectives as specified in the organization’s strategic plan;

  • Maintaining current knowledge of policy manuals, reading minutes of meetings, and keeping up to date with organizational happenings;

  • Contributing to the efficient functioning of the organization and the attainment of goals;

  • Knowing established work and administrative procedures;

  • Participates in the development planning and evaluation of treatment education, counseling, and health promotion activities of the Wawa Family Health Team;

  • Promotes awareness of the FHT’s services and programs;

  • Participates in the orientation process;

  • Promotes a safe and healthy working environment;

  • Participates in recruitment/retention initiatives; including participating on hiring committee when requested.

  • Participates in team-building initiatives/committees within the organization.

Reporting Relationships

In clinical matter, the RG collaborates with other physicians and other Wawa Family Health Team members to provide the most efficient, appropriate primary care to a client of the Wawa Family Health Team. The RG collaborates with other community health partners to deliver appropriate services and programs to the community.


Teamwork

Teamwork plays a major role on our health care team. It is required to work professionally and effectively with employees from all levels of the organization. Teamwork is required to work with other professionals and representatives of other groups and organizations in the community.
